Job description

We are looking for an organised, confident and approachable Market Manager to oversee the successful day-to-day operation of our markets.

The Market Manager will be the main point of contact on market days, supporting traders, welcoming visitors and ensuring each market is safe, well-presented and runs smoothly. This is a hands-on role that requires excellent communication, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to remain calm in a busy outdoor environment.

The successful candidate will be passionate about local markets, independent businesses and creating positive experiences for traders, visitors and the wider community.

Hours of work

This is a casual position, providing additional support during busy periods and covering staff holidays. There are currently no guaranteed hours; however, this may change in the future. Usual hours of work can vary between 10 - 12 hours per day, depending on market. 

Key responsibilities

  • Welcome traders and direct them to their allocated pitches.
  • Ensure stalls, vehicles and equipment are positioned safely and correctly.
  • Act as the main point of contact for traders, visitors and local partners.
  • Build positive working relationships with existing and prospective traders.
  • Monitor attendance and maintain accurate trader and market records.
  • Ensure health and safety procedures, risk assessments and market regulations are followed.
  • Carry out site inspections and respond promptly to any hazards or incidents.
  • Manage on-site issues and resolve trader or customer concerns professionally.
  • Monitor the appearance and cleanliness of the market throughout the day.
  • Provide feedback and reports following each market.
  • Assist with recruiting new traders and maintaining a varied, high-quality market offering.
  • Support special events, seasonal markets and other activities as required.

Requirements

Essential

  • Excellent communication and customer-service skills.
  • Strong organisational and time-management abilities.
  • Confidence working independently and making decisions on site.
  • A practical, hands-on approach and willingness to help where needed.
  • The ability to manage challenging situations calmly and professionally.
  • Good attention to detail and accurate record-keeping.
  • Basic computer and administrative skills.
  • Flexibility to work weekends, early mornings and occasional evenings.
  • The ability to work outdoors in a range of weather conditions.
  • A full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle.
  • References will be required.

Desirable

  • Previous experience managing markets, events, retail, hospitality or public spaces.
  • Experience working with traders, small businesses or local authorities.
  • Knowledge of health and safety, risk assessments and event operations.
  • First-aid training.

This role involves spending extended periods outdoors, standing and walking around market sites. Some lifting and moving of signs, barriers and other market equipment may also be required.
