Studley prepares for Christmas with lights switch-on and market

CHRISTMAS cheer is heading to Studley as the village prepares for its Christmas lights switch-on and the return of its popular festive market.

After a successful first year, the Studley Christmas Market will return from Friday, December 1, from 1.30pm until 8pm in Millennium Square on High Street. The annual Studley Christmas Lights Switch On will take place on the same day at 6.30pm, while the annual Christmas Fayre in Studley Village hall runs from 5pm until 8pm.

Siân Smith of the Studley Market Committee said: “We are very excited to bring these three exciting events together to make sure Studley celebrates Christmas in style.

“We have listened to feedback from last year and worked together to improve the whole evening with more stalls, more activities and more entertainment than before.

“It’s such a pleasure to see everyone enjoying themselves in the village.

“Studley feels like a really positive place to be at the moment and we know that the whole community will turn out to support the festivities and have a great time welcoming Christmas to the village!”

The market will be managed by CJ's Events Warwickshire Limited and coordinated by local business forum Studley in Business.

This year the market will have 20 stalls offering visitors anything from gifts, books, and jewellery, to festive food and drink.

The annual Studley Christmas Lights Switch On will take place at 6.30pm, arranged by the Studley Christmas Lights Committee.

Running alongside the action outdoors will be the annual Christmas Fayre in Studley Village Hall, which includes craft stalls and tombola’s, Santa’s grotto, and carol singing.

Two local choirs will also be performing during the afternoon and evening.

The market, which was due to take place on Abbey End in Kenilworth tomorrow (Thursday 18th January), has been cancelled as high winds of up to 48MPH are expected across the area.

A spokeswoman for the market operator, CJ’s Events Warwickshire said: “This weeks Thursday Market has been cancelled as a result of Yellow Weather Warnings of high winds, from 01:00hrs until early Thursday morning. A number of traders have already contacted the office to cancel their attendance”

They added: ‘Safety is a priority for us, and setting up market stalls tonight is not an option with the wind forecasts overnight, we have spoken to Warwick District Council and taken appropriate advice & we are following our Risk Assessments to ensure safety is maintained. We apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.’

Traders are being contacted. The market will return next Thursday, 25th January 2018.

Warwick Food Festival is set to grow and expand on to other streets around Warwick to support the demand in applications.

The festival which is now in its fourth year will take place on Sunday 27th May 2018 from 10am until 6pm. Stalls usually fill Market Place, Old Square & Market Square with a wide range of food, drink & produce, and has grown year on year and has quickly become one of Warwick's biggest events. However, this year, the organisers have had permission to expand.

Jamie Walker from CJ's Events Warwickshire said: 'Just over four years ago, we visualised a modest number of food & drink stalls, with some music. From this little idea has grown Warwick Food Festival. Following successful consultation over the past few weeks with Warwick District Councils Events Team, we have managed to secure additional streets to accommodate more stalls. The festival usually takes place on Old Square and finishes at the junction with New Street, but we’re now using Old Square right down to St. Marys Church & also New Street.’

He added: ‘Additional stalls will fill the streets, along with a second music stage, Kids Cookery Theatre and a couple of Children’s Fair Rides. The demand in this festival is unbelievable, and we’re pleased to be working with Warwick District Council to expand this event to meet the visitors demand. Applications remain closed, and we will be contacting traders who are on a reserves list.'

ORGANISERS behind Bromsgrove's first Christmas Festival have defended their decision to cancel the event 'in the interest of public safety'.

More than 30 stalls were organised for the Christmas market on Sunday (December 10), including arts and craft stalls, but CJ’s Events Warwickshire cancelled the event on Friday due to forecasted adverse weather conditions.

Dozens of residents who had planned to attend the festival then took to social media to complain.

One reader, Darryl Thomas, commented: "I've just got back from a short break in Lapland. If they cancelled things because of potential snow nothing would ever happen."

Another, Kirsty Rose, wrote: "How stupid. If anything, winter weather would make the market more Christmassy."

CJ's company director Jamie Walker has since responded to complaints, insisting the decision was not taken lightly.

He said: "The cancellation of Sunday’s market was a disappointment for our team who had spent months on planning the event. Decisions like this aren’t taken lightly.

"Although snow at a Christmas Festival would have been incredible and would have looked amazing, the behind the scenes work, which visitors don’t always consider and would put lives at risk.

Mr Walker added: "Towing trailers, setting up heavy metal frames in icy conditions, along with making traders travel to this event, is against our working ethos. By 11am on Friday, nine traders had already cancelled.

"Other consideration also has to be taken into account. How do people get to the event? Public transport is cancelled. Car Parks are blocked.

"Taking this into consideration, expected footfall would have dramatically dropped.

"We have to take advice issued by Met Office and make a decision on this.

"It would have been too dangerous for our team and traders to have worked in these conditions.

"Safety if our upmost priority, rather than financial gain."
